How It All Began

In November 2018, Aparica’s journey began with my personal quest for healing. Battling physical exhaustion and debilitating pain from a severe disc injury, I longed for a place that could restore my spirit—a place that embodied warmth, familiarity, and love. That place was home, my roots:  The African continent.

What started as a short trip to reconnect with loved ones in Nigeria, Ghana, and Tanzania turned into a six-month journey that changed my life. The pain that had consumed me for two years gradually disappeared, but it wasn’t just the tropical heat that healed me—it was the warmth from people, the culture, and the stories of the African artisans I met along the way.

Everywhere I travelled, I encountered remarkable men and women crafting extraordinary products, each one woven with a unique story. Some had skills passed down through generations, others had learned trades that carried their family’s heritage and lineage, and many reflected the heartbeat of the African life and pace itself. Yet, despite their incredible talents and the beauty of their work, these artisans had no direct access to the global market. Their livelihoods depended on sales from local market, domestic trade fairs & exhibitions, tourists, and the occasional luck of being found by foreign middlemen.

The idea for Aparica came to me on a journey back to the UK. I was thinking about how I could restock some of the amazing products I was bringing back from Nigeria, Tanzania, and Ghana. I had grown so used to the quality and uniqueness of these items that nothing else seemed to compare. That’s when the vision for Aparica truly began—to create a space where others could experience and appreciate these incredible, authentic products while supporting the African artisans, allowing share their stories unapologetically, of their African culture and traditions through the lens of the crafts & produces

Empowering Authentic African Artisans

On Aparica, we celebrate Africa’s finest produce, her artisans and the stories behind their crafts. Our journey began as a quest for healing and reconnection for our founder, but as we delved deeper into the African artisan space, a unique truth emerged. We found two distinct groups of players: non-African individuals who have made Africa their home and businesses—whether for-profit or non-profit, and the true custodians of African creativity—the indigenous African artisans themselves. These solopreneurs and small business owners unapologetically express their heritage and identity through their crafts & produce.

Authenticity Rooted in African Stories

Yet, the challenge is clear: these artisans, despite their authenticity and creativity, often lack the financial means to amplify their voices on a global scale. At Aparica, we believe true authenticity comes from having full control over one’s craft and story, without external influence. As Chinua Achebe, one of Africa’s greatest literary, once said, “Nobody can teach me who I am. You can describe parts of me, but who I am – and what I need – is something I have to find out myself.” This philosophy drives our mission. We focus on championing African artisans who own their narratives, partnering only with them and a small number of carefully selected non-profits whose causes align with our vision.

Celebrating Africa’s Craftsmanship Globally

Aparica creates a bridge between these artisans and the global market, showcasing the finest produce and handcrafted products from across the continent. Each item tells a story—a story of resilience, heritage, and the rich traditions of Africa. As Chinua Achebe once said, “If you only hear one side of the story, you have no understanding at all.” At Aparica, we ensure that every artisan’s voice is heard, their story is told in their own voice, and their craft is celebrated for the world to see.

A Global Platform for African Stories

Africa is bursting with talent—artisans who pour generations of tradition, culture, and passion into every product they create. But for many of these creators, mostly, their market is limited to local buyers and trade fairs. Aparica was born to change that. We believe in telling the untold stories—authentic, raw, and from the heart. Just like the African proverbs that says – “A tree cannot stand without its roots”; each product we offer, from spices to teas, raw honey, shea butter, baobab, and many more, carries with it the rich narrative of Africa’s culture, traditions, and heritage of her artisan. We exist to give Africa’s artisans a global stage, connecting their exceptional products with customers who value quality, authenticity, and meaning; whilst ensuring full transparency to our customers and in turn providing the artisans receive the recognition and rewards, they deserve. Our mission is to continue to support the livelihoods of the African artisans and help preserve their traditions for future generations.

Shop Stories, Not Just Products

We believe that true quality lies in the care and intention behind every product. That’s why we intentionally partner with selective artisans from the continent who pour their heart and heritage into their work. Whether it is the spices harvested at their peak, handcrafted shea-butter or jewellery, or organic raw honey, every item tells a story of authenticity, culture, and craftsmanship. We’re committed to delivering products that meet the highest global standards without ever losing the charm and originality that make them uniquely African. Every purchase from Aparica is a celebration of African artistry and a step toward sustainable, ethical shopping & living.
